September 22, 2012

  • Today marks the First Day of Autumn

  • National White Chocolate Day
  • Dear Diary Day
As I think of fall the first thing that comes to mind to me is "cooler weather"! My favorite time of year besides spring. I am thankful for all that God has blessed me with and I count my blessings. It marks the end to a hot summer and the trees drop their leaves in beautiful shades of orange, red, and yellow.
I wanted to share this with you and thought that you might enjoy this, too! I have added a link for you to get some fall recipes and there is a link to tell you about the fall equinox. Hope this is fun for you! I am sharing this with my love and kindness. I pray that everyone has a wonderful day and don't forget to eat your white chocolate, spend time with your kids, and write in your diary!

My cup runneth over!

As this semester wraps up I have to say "whew", I survived. I feel blessed that I have a wonderful family that has helped me along by making me feel loved. My aunt cooked the best supper tonight and my son got to play with his little cousin. We went walking in the lumber yard watching the kids run and play and laugh! The laughter is the sweetest sound God could have let me hear. I never thought that I could be happy again after my second failed marriage, but the truth is that I am happier than I have ever been. Raising my son is hard, but it is also rewarding! I had a great day filled with love and laughter. My cup runneth over! :)

In The Garden

As I get older I have started to focus my attention on gardening. I just assume that I get this from my family because I do not know of many seasons at our house that we have went without garden. I did not realize how hard gardening can be until this year.
My neighbor came by and plowed me up a garden spot and left some mood-a grass in it. For those who don't know what mood-a grass is....let's just say it is aggravating to rake out of a garden. Mood-a grass is Bermuda grass. I have blisters from raking just three rows of it out just yesterday. I managed to get three rows of corn planted and I am just getting started. I have fed my Queen Elizabeth rose bush with miracle grow rose food and now it is blooming out beautiful light pink roses that smell amazing! My hosta that I planted last year came back this year!
We reap what we sow can be applied to everyday life and not just in our gardens. He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail. (Proverbs 22:8 KJV) They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. (Psalm 126:5 KJV) A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. (Luke 8:5 KJV) My grandmother used to say, "idle hands are a devils workshop." I did not know what she meant by that until I was older. My garden keeps me busy and out of trouble.
When winter comes I can look in my freezer and take out some really good soup starter and have no worries because I will have something good and homemade to eat. I will enjoy it more than a store- bought product. I hope everyone considers gardening. It may be hard work, but in the harvest season it can be quite rewarding.

Good Friday

Good Friday

Good Friday is a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians remembering the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is also known as Black Friday, Holy Friday, Great Friday or Easter Friday refers to the Friday in Easter week.
The Catholic Church treats Good Friday as a fast day which means that they only eat two smalls meals in a day that does not equal up to a full meal and contains no meat.
The United States Good Friday is not a government holiday at the federal level; however, individual states may observe the holiday.
As, the granddaughter of two, now deceased, Sunday School Teachers, I have to say that I need to do better in observing the fact that Jesus Christ died on Calvary for my sins.

"Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. ~John 11: 25-26

May everyone have a blessed weekend and a happy Easter!!!!! My son and I will be hunting eggs with the cousins. Don't forget Sunrise Services 7am at Poplar Springs Baptist Church or come out to Foothills Community Church. We would love to have you!

Spring has Sprung!

Allergies, allergies, and more allergies! Did I mention allergies? Everybody is getting outside and loving this weather that we are having, but with this beautiful weather comes the blooms from our trees and shrubs reaping havoc on our sinuses.
Now is the time to get to cleaning out our closets and changing out our air filters. Planting shrubs and flowers makes your yard look so pretty. Just remember that annuals only last for a season and perrinials come back next year.
Now is the time for animals and humans alike to start mating and love is in the air. Spring is my favorite time of year! I know this because, I see the birds getting into my carport building nests to have their babies. I hope that everybody has a wonderful spring and get to cleaning.
Sunday is April Fools Day so, just a reminder keep your jokes clean! Summer will be soon so enjoy this weather while you can! Oh, and don't forget Palm Sunday!

St. Patrick's Day!!!!!

Saturday March 17th 2012
 Fun Facts!!!

According to St. Patricks Day lore, Patrick used three leaves of a shamrock to explain the christian holy trinity:
The Father
The Son and
The Holy Spirit!
Millions of people will be celebrating St. Patricks Day tomorrow. People will wear green, will eat green eggs-n-ham, cook corned beef and cabbage, and celebrate with pints of green beer!
Someone even dies the river green in Chicago! http://www.greenchicagoriver.com/
• Dublin's St. Patrick's Day parade is little more than 75 years old. This year festival organizers will launch 15,000 pounds (7 metric tons) of fireworks to cap their celebration, which is expected to draw 400,000 spectators.
• Today New York's St. Patrick's Day parade is the longest running civilian parade in the world. This year nearly three million spectators are expected to watch the spectacle and some 150,000 participants plan to march.
For those of you interrested in the St. Patrick himself. St. Patrick wasn't even Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an aristocratic Christian family with a townhouse, a country villa, and plenty of slaves.
What's more, Patrick professed no interest in Christianity as a young boy, Freeman noted.
At 16, Patrick's world turned: He was kidnapped and sent overseas to tend sheep as a slave in the chilly, mountainous countryside of Ireland for seven years.

According to folklore, a voice came to Patrick in his dreams, telling him to escape. He found passage on a pirate ship back to Britain, where he was reunited with his family.
The voice then told him to go back to Ireland.
"He gets ordained as a priest from a bishop, and goes back and spends the rest of his life trying to convert the Irish to Christianity," Freeman said.
Patrick's work in Ireland was tough—he was constantly beaten by thugs, harassed by the Irish royalty, and admonished by his British superiors. After he died on March 17, 461, Patrick was largely forgotten.
But slowly, mythology grew around Patrick, and centuries later he was honored as the patron saint of Ireland, Freeman noted.

The March 17th tradition of wearing green is explained in differing ways. It's said that blue was originally the color associated with the holiday but over time green took over in popularity due to Ireland's nickname as "The Emerald Isle", the green in the Irish flag and the clover that St. Patrick used in his teachings about Catholicism.
In Ireland, some still follow the tradition where Catholics wear green and Protestants wear orange. These colors are associated with the religious sects and are the represented on the Irish flag; the white on the flag is symbolic of the peace between the two.
On the holiday, people in Ireland do not wear as much green or celebrate quite as wildly as revelers do elsewhere, although there is a legend that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns that will pinch you if they can see you.

Happy St. Patrick's Day Everybody!!! Be safe this year if you are sipping the green beer!!!!! Do not drink and drive!!!! I will leave you with a little St.Patty's Day Video!!!

Ash Wednesday February 22, 2012

Many Christian Americans mark Ash Wednesday as the first day of Lent. It follows Shrove Tuesday, which features Mardi Gras celebrations.
Some Christians in the United States attend special Ash Wednesday church services. This includes students who attend Catholic and other church schools. Priests usually place blessed ashes in form of the cross on individuals' foreheads to remind them of mortality, sorrow for sins, change, and forgiveness.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lenten discipline for observant Christians. It is traditionally a time of fasting and prayer in preparation for receiving or reaffirming baptism at Easter. For some Christians, Lent is a time to think about one's life choices and mortality, as well as reflect on life directions. It serves as a wakeup call for some Christians. There are also those who choose this time of the year to donate to charities or take part in charity events as a way to get close to God.

I am all for this celebration although my church is Baptist and we not do celebrate this religious symbolism of Lent. My grandmother used to take this time to fast, but I do not carry on the tradition of fasting at this time. As you grow in your faith and become more Christ- like, then you have a deeper understanding, of the practice and ritual that takes place on Ash Wednesday. Mostly the catholic churches reflect lent and some branches from the Catholic Church like Episcopal. We have a catholic church in Seneca, located on Bountyland Road which is just to the left and off of hwy 28 going toward Walhalla behind the original Bountyland Quick Stop. The building is amazing and is so beautiful. So even if you are not Catholic it is worth coming to look at just for the beautiful architecture. Next comes Easter which is widely celebrated by all Christians. Who don't love to celebrate Easter? It is such a joyous occasion!

Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is very exciting especially if you have kids. It is all about love in the air and exchanging cards, flowers, candy, and gifts. As a mother I just love getting that list of students and helping my son fill out the cards to give out to all of his class mates. We had loads of fun this year and I can't wait until the next time. I put together a little info on Valentine's Day you might just be interested in reading!
Cupid
In Roman mythology, Cupid (Latin cupido, meaning "desire") is the god of desire, affection and erotic love. He is often portrayed as the son of the goddess Venus, with a father rarely mentioned. His Greek counterpart is Eros. Cupid is also known in Latin as Amor ("Love"). The Amores (plural) or amorini in the later terminology of art history are the equivalent of the Greek Erotes.
Although Eros appears in Classical Greek art as a slender winged youth, during the Hellenistic period he was increasingly portrayed as a chubby boy. During this time, his iconography acquired the bow and arrow that remain a distinguishing attribute; a person, or even a deity, who is shot by Cupid's arrow is filled with uncontrollable desire. The Roman Cupid retains these characteristics, which continue in the depiction of multiple cupids in both Roman art and the later classical tradition of Western art.[1]
In Latin literature, Cupid's ability to compel love and desire plays an instigating role in several myths or literary scenarios. In Vergil's Aeneid, Cupid prompts Dido to fall in love with Aeneas, with tragic results. Ovid makes Cupid the patron of love poets. Cupid is a central character, however, in only the traditional tale of Cupid and Psyche, as told by Apuleius.
Cupid was a continuously popular figure in the Middle Ages, when under Christian influence he often had a dual nature as Heavenly and Earthly love, and in the Renaissance, when a renewed interest in classical philosophy endowed him with complex allegorical meanings. In contemporary popular culture, Cupid is shown shooting his bow to inspire romantic love, often as an icon of Valentine's Day. Copied.

The movie clip that I attached is from the new movie "The Vow" that is based on a real life story and is out in theaters just in time for you to go see it for Valentines Day!

Volunteering

Volunteering is something that is near and dear to my heart! Our communities where we live depends on volunteers everyday to keep a town going. Take the local soup kitchen. If it wasn't for people coming in to volunteer...our homeless would not have anything to eat. Our Daily Rest in Seneca  houses the homeless for Oconee County. We have our local food bank which in my town is called the Golden Corner Food Bank. Habitat for Humanity builds affordable houses for people. Fire Departments are mostly ran by volunteers. (I myself am inactive Corinth-Shiloh Fire Department Station #3.We have first responders again..(former ER-1, ER-4 board member and special needs). Volunteers at the hospital. We have volunteers who work at a pregnancy center counciling crisis pregnancies and that give out diapers, baby food, and clothes. We have the Sunday School Classes at local churches. Our local Red Cross DAT Team is a great one. CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a great one! We have many opportunities to get out there and make a difference in our community. It looks really great on a resume and you get to meet some of the greatest people. Who knows...they might even help you one day!!! Go and volunteer somewhere! You'll be glad you did!

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is February 2, 2012
Movie "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray (scene)

Groundhogs are small furry animals also called woodchucks. Groundhogs grow to be arond 20 inches and weigh about 9 pounds and live in burrows. A groundhogs life-span is around 4-6 years and when they reproduce they have up to about five of  what you would call pups or kits that are four inches long and weigh about one ounce.
In Europe in the 1600's they starting using hedgehogs to tell what the weather would be. In America, Grounhog Day was started in 1887 by a congressman and an editor in Pennsylvania. The little town of Punxstutawney became the "Weather Capital of the World".
Folk Lore says that Feburary 2nd can predict when spring will come. Old stories say that if a groundhog sees its shadow on this date, there will be about six more weeks of winter. Those stories also say that if a groundhog doesn't see its shadow , spring will come early. When will winter end? When will spring begin? On Groundhog Day, you might find out the answers. In a little town called Punxsutawawney, Pennsylvnania there is a groundhog named Punxsrtawney Phil. People come from miles around to Gobbler's Hill to wait for Phil to come out of his hole. People celebrate this day with festivites, apparel, contest, and it is nationally televised. You can join the club. I will list some books, web sites, and I have included a scene from the movie "Groundhog Day" on my blog. I hope you celebrate and I do hope that the groundhog does NOT see his shadow. I am ready for spring!!!!
